how many of us are buying furniture online?

Posted by roomplanners.com on February 15, 2010

More of us are buying furnishings and furniture online, though we seem to be fairly specific about what we’d rather buy in a furniture store.

But while home accents lead online home furnishing sales, sales of a few furniture categories are growing.  To date, though, they’re wood casegoods rather than upholstery… and bedroom furniture rather than mattresses. It’s no surprise that most of us want to test out the comfort of a sofa or mattress in a store.

So does age make a difference in what’s bought online? Yes, a little. But it seems more based on what types of furniture different age groups need than how willing they are to buy online!

* Home accents are purchased by all age groups equally.
* Generation Y (20-something) buys more bedroom and TV furniture.
* Generation X (30-40-something) buys more kids furniture and desks.
* Baby boomers buy more TV furniture, desks and second bedrooms.

Here’s the breakdown of home furnishing products were bought online last year (with percent of online ‘home furnishing’ buyers who bought them):

Bed linens (66%)
Wall décor (50%)
Area rugs (39%)
Lamps (34%)
Occasional tables (13%)
TV furniture (13%)
Desks (11%)
Youth / other adult (10%)
Master bedroom (8%)
Casual dining (8%)
Outdoor dining set (8%)
Dining room storage (6%)
Stationary chair (6%)
Stationary sofas (5%)
Mattress / boxspring (4%)
Dining room table (4%)
Reclining chairs (2%)

Internet sales are expected to grow to $174B by 2011, a 24% increase over 2008. Furniture and bedding represent about 3.5% of that number, or about $6.1B.

Martha Stewart products launch at Home Depot

Posted by roomplanners.com on January 8, 2010

Martha Stewart's Miramir at Home Depot. 5-pce outdoor dining set, $524

Look for Martha Stewart-branded products in Home Depot stores this month.

The new partnership, announced in September, 2009, will include outdoor furniture, paint, storage, lighting and cleaning products… and bring together the country’s largest home hardware chain (that’s eager to attract more women) with one of the top celebrity brands (that already does).

Martha Stewart’s ten year marriage with Kmart will end this month. A decade after the joint venture to offer consumers housewares, decorative accessories, RTA furniture, lighting and outdoor furniture under the Martha Stewart Everyday  brand, the companies are parting ways. At their zenith, revenues were a billion dollars, MSLO executives say. in 2008, Martha Stewart Living reported that 43% of its merchandising revenue came from the Kmart line.

Stewart’s outdoor living products will be the first category to launch at Home Depot in January, with home organization following in February and paint in March. Executives say at least one dining set will sell for under $400. Organizational products will include a one-track closet system and a 9-cube storage unit. The 280-color line of Martha Stewart paint colors will replace the Ralph Lauren paint brand. Cleaning products will also be available, including 10 under Home Depot’s ”Eco-options” line.

Home Depot is the nation’s largest home improvement retailer, with 2,241 stores in the U.S. and Canada

Martha Stewart has additional home-based licensing partnerships with Macy’s (bedding, food preparation, dining and entertaining lines), Wedgewood (fine china), Bernhardt (furniture), Murrary Feiss (lighting), Flor (floor design), Safavieh (rugs) and 1-800 flowers (flowers and gifts). The company claims 1.4M  followers on Twitter.

mattresses rated by quality of sleep

Posted by roomplanners.com on January 2, 2010

So who’s getting the best sleep these days? Well, acccording to a research study by Furntiure/Today and HGTV, it’s likely to have a lot to do with which type of mattress they’re sleeping on!

Since shopping for a new mattresses isn’t the easiest thing you’ll ever do…   some consumer feedback might be helpful. Here’s what we know!

Innerspring mattresses and innerspring core with specialty foam are the most common mattresses currently being slept on. Here’s the breakdown of how many consumers are sleeping on which type of mattresses:

Innerspring – 59%
Innerspring core with specialty foam – 23%
Memory foam – 8%
Air mattress – 5%
Latex foam mattress – 3%

Air bed mattresses and memory foam mattresses ranked highest among consumers for an “excellent” or “good” night’s sleep. When asked about the quality of night’s sleep they were getting:

74% sleeping on AIR BED mattresses said excellent (37%) or good (37%)
71% sleeping on MEMORY FOAM mattresses said excellent (34%) or good (37%)
67% sleeping on LATEX mattresses said excellent (32%) or good (35%)
56% sleeping on INNERSPRING W/ SPECIAL FOAM mattresses said excellent (15%) or good (41%)
36% sleeping on INNERSPRING mattresses said excellent (6%) or good (30%).

The age of a mattress is directly related to the quality of sleep. When those who claimed an “excellent” or “good” quality of sleep were asked when they’d purchased their mattress:

60% said in 2008
58% said between 2005 and 2007
44% said between 2002 and 2004
38% said between 2001 and 2000
29% said in 1999 or earlier

Memory foam mattresses are slightly preferred by younger consumers. Of those ranking memory foam mattresses as the ”most comfortable” mattress:

46% were under age 35
45% were age 35-44
30% were age 45-54
26% were age 55-64
30% were age 65 or older

Innerspring mattresses with a specialty foam are preferred my middle age consumers. Of those ranking innerspring mattresses with specialty foam as the “most comfortabe” mattress:

35% were under 35
32% were age 35-44
41% were age 45-54
40% were age 55-64
35% were age 65 or older

Bottom line… mattress preferences are very personal, and it’s important to take the time you need to choose the right one. But you do tend to get what you pay for. Mattress engineering has come a long way the past 5-10 years and spending a little more money on a quality mattress can make a big difference to your quality of life, not just sleep!

what’s new in dining room furniture

Posted by roomplanners.com on November 17, 2009

The latest dining room furniture trends may just make eating at home more exciting than going out…

Fresh from the recent furniture market in High Point, NC, here’s what’s new in dining room furniture:

1. More casual styling. Formal dining rooms are taking it down (or is it up?) a notch with higher height tables that let you eat soufle on bar stools… square-shaped tables that create all chairs equal (no seating heirarchy based on  armchairs versus side chairs)… and styling influences beyond 18th century France.

2. Sideboards and servers rather than china cabinets. A fancy china cabinet is no longer a requirement with a dining room. Simple sideboards and buffet cabinets are proving versatile for those of us who’d rather entertain buffet-style than sit down for a formal dinner. They’re less bulky in small spaces, can be placed under a window or dressed with handsome table lamps, artwork or a ….

3. Mirrror above the buffet cabinet. Whether you want to buy a mirror that matches your buffet sideboard or step out with a contrasting style or finish, the look of an elegant mirror above a sideboard is elegant and space-expanding.

4. Granite or marble countertops.  More buffet cabinets are featuring countertop-like counters with granite, marble or a synthetic surfaces that holds up to hot plates, liquid spills and the scuffs of moving bowls and plates.

5. Wired-up serving counters.  A power bar built into a buffet cabinet lets you easily reach a plug to fire up a blender, add a lamp or warm up a warming tray without crawling under the furniture, or draping electrical cords alongside your coq au vin.

6. Wine storage. We”re not just eating at home more these day; we’re entertaining more too… and adding wine to the menu. Designated wine cubbies, wine slots and wine shelves are nearly a standard in new dining room storage cabinets.

7. More comfortable chairs.  Louis XV chairs won’t be going out of style anytime soon, but there is  move afoot to add upholstered chairs with lounge-inspiration that invite lingering at the table long after the plates are cleared.

8. Benches. Forever a staple of country styling, benches are moving from rustic and a little bit uncomfortable to upholstered and very chic. They’re also adding a back (if you’ve sat in a backless bench for any length of time, you’ll agree this is a really good idea.)  Today’s contemporary benches resemble a small settee and perfectly replace 2 chairs on the side of the table.

9. Tables with storage. Many higher height gathering tables pack extra shelves and storage into their pedestals for over-sized platters, less-used dishes and wine bottles. But with more of us using our dining rooms as office space, storage drawers and slide-out compartments for pencils and office supplies are being added under the surface of some tables.

10. Eclectic styles. One of the easiest places to mix things up a little is around a dinner table. The latest dining trend is to mix two types of chairs – wood and upholstered – together at a table.

are bedrooms becoming the new home office?

Charged-up night stand - Aspenhome

Nightstand detail from aspenhome

For those of us who can’t be away from our Blackberry, iPhone or laptop computer, even at night, there’s good news. We don’t have to.

Today’s night stands are becoming command central, with built-in outlets that keep us close to and powered up to all manner of portable electronics. They also make it easy to grab the cord and run, if we need to bring it along.

Some night stands are integrating storage drawers with a power bar inside, others installing a flip-up panel on the top or side of the night stand for easy access.

Yes, this is as exciting as it sounds!  Just think of the possibilities

With your cell phone powering up next to your bed, you’ll be able to twitter, text message or check on the Japanese stock market at 3 am… all without losing battery power. You’ll wrap up that power point presentation for work the next day while watching David Letterman… or make coffee without leaving your bed. And very, very soon, crawling under the bed to reach an outlet will seem positively medieval.

Look out for more small desks in  bedrooms too… not the clunky kind with lots of drawers, but smaller writing-desk versions with just enough space for a lap top.

asian furniture antiques inspire casual dining room

Hooker Furniture - Legends table

Legends by Hooker Furniture

Not sitting down to a formal dinner as much as you used to? You’re not alone. In fact, casual dining is a growing trend these days.

Casual dining doesn’t mean you don’t cook up a storm or have friends over for beef bourguignon. It just means you don’t get worked up over it. You’re also perfectly ok dispensing with fancy china. In fact, you may or may not own any.

A new dining room from Hooker Furniture, the Legends, brings together the most appealing casual dining trends today. Its styling recalls relaxed Asian décor, rustic wood furniture and the lasting appeal of solid wood furniture. It includes a unique bar table that could easily double as a laptop table and a dramatic dining table that will even fit into loft apartments.

Though I was asked by Hooker Furniture to critique the entire dining room furniture collection, I’m compelled to get my favorite feature on the table first… because it is, in fact, the table.

Hooker Furniture - Legends finish detail

Table top finish mixes 4 wood species for an antique effect

With the distressed wood, antique table planking and worn edges, it was a stretch to believe this table wasn’t antique or solid wood. I was told that the company’s creative folks spent quite some time crafting the perfect simulation of a solid wood table top… without the warping and splitting that tend to plague solid wood furniture. By integrating four different wood species into a narrow planked veneer pattern, they achieved the look of solid wood and an Asian furniture antique at a fraction of the price for either.  (Expect to pay around $1600 for the table and 4 chairs).

This Asian furniture inspiration makes the Legends dining room furniture ideal for anyone who likes zen interior design and Asian décor… key inspirations for casual dining today. The Asian antique qualities are seen in the iron hardware, high-sheen finish, Tibetan-like stool and flared corners that hint at the elegant edges of a Pagoda. I could have done with a little less of the Pagoda edge on some of the smaller accent pieces (not shown), but the overall effect is so relaxing that I doubt I’d be bothered by it for long.

What I most like about this dining room is its versatility – it would fit equally well into contemporary, casual traditional or cottage decorating styles.

Rake-back chair

Rake-Back chair

Hooker Furniture - Legends Cheeta chair

Cheetz Copper chair

There are two dining chair options. The rake-back chair has a simple, schoolhouse quality to it, but the dark finish looks chic. The upholstered Cheetz Copper chair has, yes, a cheetah-like print on it. But the chair is so streamlined and the print so small that I can guarantee you won’t become the victim of an I-thought-it-was-a-good-idea-at-the-time animal-print fashion trend. I especially liked the option to mix the chairs around the table because casual living is translating into less matchy-matchy home décor.

The open storage shelves above the buffet cabinet are great not just for storing dinner dishes, but for artfully mixing them with books and other favorite things. I liked the open surface at counter height for placing platters or drinks for dinner parties, and also the reversible wine storage shelves inside the cabinet.

Speaking of dinner parties, you won’t have to pull the table apart to have one. At a generous 84” long, this leaf-free table is longer than a kitchen table, but shorter than a formal dining table. It easily fits 8 people and lets you sprawl out your projects, puzzles and paraphernalia and still reserve a corner for dinner. But at just 38” wide, it’s not a space hog.

Hooker Furniture - Legends credenza and stools

Legends credenza with wood bar stools

The credenza suggests you could double your dining room as a home office. The design resembles an Asian antique sideboard. Two wood bar stools tuck in on either end – for a quick snack or for use as a casual lap top table. The credenza is finished the same on both sides. And with storage drawers that pull out on either side, you can use it as a room divider in an open floor plan, a bar table or serving surface. Unfortuatnely, the storage drawers are too deep to store small things. But they could store cocktail bottles, bulky table linens or file folders.

Legends will look good with tailored or contemporary furnishings and colors in earthy or natural colors. I’d place an exotic textured or patterned area rug underneath the table and hang two simple drum-shaped lamp shades above it.

Look for the Legends dining room at Hooker Furniture retailers this fall. More information is available at  www.hookerfurniture.com.
